A good war-date Southern citizen's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, in period ink, by Elbert S. Cassady (former private 9th Georgia), Lafayette, Ga., Aug. 14, 1862 to his cousin Nannie E. Sawyers, in part: "…it is reported that there has been a skirmish at or near Tazewell and that our troops drove the feds back and occupied the town. That is the way to serve the rascals. They aught to be driven to the Northern ocean and then baptized head fomost through ice 40 feete thick…Stonewall has whipped Pope. I hope that it is so. There is hundreds of soldiers & wagons passing through here every day from Tupelo to Chattanooga…the commissary…told me that we had one hundred & twelve thousand soldiers at Chattanooga…there has [been] several thousand gone there since. They will sweep out Tennessee in a short time. There is 2 companies some where above Knoxsville from Walker Co. One of them is commanded by Capt. Brady. The other by Capt. Hill. They are both clever men. They are in the 39th Regt. Geo. Vol. Commanded by Col. McConnel. Rus was well on the third. He come out safe. Mr. Fletcher is at Gordonsville [Va.] He is well…several Negros started to Lincoln's army last week from here. We caught them and brought them back and sent them South. There is a woman in jail that will be hanged for burning a house…E. S. Cassady…". The original "DUE 10" transmittal cover is included. Near fine.
