A good war-date Southern citizen's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, in period ink, by Elbert S. Cassady (former private 9th Georgia), Lafayette, Ga., Mar. 20, 1863 to his cousin Nannie E. Sawyers, in part: "…that was a bad spot of work and very mean in those people to conseal torys & traitors about their house…such cattle should not roost about me, No! I would fight until I died, defending my house…they done right in burning that barn and every roof and corner that shelters a tory…I don't mean the women and children, but the men that is skulking about like sheep killing dog in the day time [that] cant look a true Southern Patriot strait in the face without twisting their eyes about…there has been some bushwhacking in our country in the last few days, but no body killed…the balls whispers tolerably close sometimes. They pass through man's hat, but generally through his coat. The bush whackers operate mostly in the cove about 12 miles from Lafayette as there is a good place there for cowardly wretches to hide in…we will give them a hoist from there in a short time…the small pox in here…one man had died and as there is no communication from that point t our little city we don't know how they are getting along…the man that died had just got home from Virginia…it is very dangerous to travel on the cars at this time for the small pox is at nearly all the towns on the rail roads…if those tories did not take me in out of the wet…I don't recon they would if they gave me a chance…for I am always prepared for a skirmish or a pitch battle…good bye, Ebb…".
