A good war-date Southern citizen's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written, in period ink, by Elbert S. Cassady (former private 9th Georgia), Lafayette, Ga., Aug 9, 1863 to his cousin Nannie E. Sawyers, in part: "…there is no doubt of [John Hunt] Morgan being captured that will be glory enough for the vandals…I hope that he will be exchanged in a short time so that he may return to his command and execute his designs with more vigor than ever before…that dark cloud that has been hanging over our land so long seems to grow more dark and angry…and [crossed out] us with extermination if we dare to defend our homes…where is the patriot that would not be willing to sacrifice his life in defense of his home and all that he holds dear if it was necessary. A true Southern Patriot would be willing to die half a dozen times if it were possible…to save his home from the hands of our enemies…they are a set of merciless vagabonds…the Yanks is at our doors…there is too much extortion, stealing etc going on in our land. God will not recognize such conduct…the People of the Confederacy will have to repent…before this war closes…I will be there some time between now and Christmas if the Yanks don't interfere…the enrolling officers are enrolling from 40 to 45 now. There is some excitement about it but nothing serious…E. S. Cassady…". The original transmittal cover is included. VG.
