Confederate General Johnson Hagood's personal copy of the Charleston Mercury, 2pp. large folio, Charleston, S. C., Nov. 11, 1863. Headlines include the, "Latest from Bragg's Army" concerning his tightening the noose around Chattanooga; "News from Kentucky" reporting that members of Col. John Hunt Morgan command claim Yankee soldiers had murdered Confederate soldiers after they surrendered. Other articles include the "Constitutional Restrictions upon the Power of Taxation", and "The Message of the Governor of Georgia." Johnson Hagood (1829-1898) original colonel of the 1st South Carolina Vols., who participated in the firing on Fort Sumter, Second Bull Run and the battle of Battery Wagner on Morris Island. He was promoted brigadier general in July 1862. It was Hagood who declared that commander of the 54th Mass. Vols. (Colored) was buried with his niggers after Col. Robert G. Shaw was killing while leading the charge upon Wagner. At the time Hagood received this newspaper he was stationed in Charleston as a brigade commander after having recently evacuated Battery Wagner.
