Presley, 1st Alabama Cavalry, 4pp. octavo, Near Social Circle, Marshal County, Georgia, August 9, 1864, and reads in part: “...I am going to send old Black Hawk home...I have bought a Yankee mare to ride...I forgot to say to you in my last letter that we captured General Stoneman the Yankee General commanding the raid made through Georgia. We are now in camp near Social Circle in Marshal County, Ga. I sent the last letter I wrote to you by a Mr. Hudson a soldier from the Virginia Army belonging to the 43rd Ala. Infantry...Send the children to school all you can. Education is worth more than anything else they can get, try to impress it on their minds that to learn their books is the greatest thing they can do, and try to keep them from company with wicked naughty boys. Send them to Church and see that they behave themselves at church as good children should do. And learn them to respect old age not be as some boys in the army are. Call old men by their names as though they were several years their senior...” Fine condition.
