War-date Confederate soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by John C. Cox, Co. H, 11th Mississippi Cavalry, 4pp. octavo, Marietta, Georgia, June 14, 1864, with cover addressed to his wife, and reads in part: “...The big fight has not come off yet but we think it can not be long. The cannons has been firing up and down the lines for the last two or three days. The Yankees will hafter force their way through our lines as they cannot flank us. If they undertake to do that I think [Genl.] Johnston will whip them. I hope no doubt as soon as the fight is over that we will return to Miss....I am very anxious to get home and see you and Jimmy and more often I think of you and home and hope that the war will soon close....There is neither corn or meat in this part of Georgia. I do not see how the people are to live as the army destorys everything where they pass....I was glad to receive your last letter and hear from you that you was getting along well with the crops and that the prospect for meat was good for the next year. So there is no danger of our starving out next year. If we can only keep the Yankees out of the country. Your idea of giving the negroes their allowance for three months in case the government gathers to presss the meat I think is a very good one. You must feed the negroes as they will steal all your hogs. I would only give two months allowance....Do not say anything how you are managing it. I do not think the government will press any meat as there seems to be plenty in the country. My dear I want you to keep Jimmy to school every day that you can for it is all important that he should be kept at school. He will soon hafter go in the army if the war continues but I pray that it will close before that time...” Fine condition.
