Southern Civilian Letter, 1pp., August 25, 1864, signed by “A.J. Pierce,” VG. In part, “... “it is true I have sons in the Confederate service that have been home but as for either of them being guilty of the charge alleged to them I declare it to be a false and defamatory accusation...” He asks for a chance to clear himself and for permission to return home: “...I have a growing crop which needs my attention... need it for my little ones that are not able to watch over themselves... You have the power over me...”
