DIX, John A.(1798-1879) Union Major General, commanded 7th Corps. He was appointed Secretary of the Treasury on January 15, 1861 as a late Buchanan appointee, and is famous for his American Flag Dispatch and the declaration "If anyone attempts to haul down the American Flag, shoot him on the spot."Partly-printed pass signed “John A. Dix Maj. Genl.” 1p. 5”x5”, New York City, April 18, 1864 [printed date of 1864, though issued 1865], Head Quarters, Department of the East, and reads: “Pass Mr. Wier to Harts Island to see his son.” VG. Harts Island, was used as a Union prison camp November 1864 to April 1865, and housed almost 3500 Confederates.
