A good war-date Union officer's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Captain Augustus Alonzo Hoit, Co. G, 8th Maine Vols. (later captain 34th USCT), Hilton Head, S. C., Dec. 27, 1861, in part: "…we had an inspection and review today by Gen. [Thomas W.] Sherman and staff. Company G was pronounced to be the best Co. in the Regt as usual. Many of our officers think of resigning…and returning home. Our Col. [Lee Strickland] has already gone home…the Lieut. Col. [Ephraim W. Woodman] has taken his place and as bad as the old one was, the new one can not half fill his place…that is…why our officers are so anxious to resign…I should not be surprised if nearly all our officers should resign…if Gen. Viele had had command of this expedition we should…have taken Charleston before this time. He is much better than Gen. Sherman…Charles Moore…is much liked by his officers and comrades…he is every inch a soldier…the rest of our Gouldsboro boys are well…our forces have possession of the whole coats between Charleston and Savannah. Our troops are building a fort on Tybee Island for the purpose of bombarding Fort Pulaski…will…commence in a day or two. The rebels have tried to disturb them but cannot bring the guns of Pulaski to bear…Oscar Moore is on board the Pawnee…he is well…yours in love, Alonzo…". VG
