War-date Union soldier's letter, 5pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. H. Arthur White [WIA Drewry's Bluff, Va., 5/16/64], Co. H., 25th Mass. Vols., Camp Hicks, Annapolis, MD, Dec. 8, 1861, in part: "…we did not expect there would be a meeting…in camp as Mr. James was poisoned last week in the woods…we did not think he would be able to preach…the Episcopal Church down town is a very pretty one on the inside. It is not finished yet on the outside…after church we went down to the headquarters of the patrol guard…we found them in an old dance hall built by the British…it has ben used for an Assembly room…also as the armory of the Gov's Guards…the Mass. 25th has been assigned the most honorable position in the division, the right of the first brigade under Brig. Gen. Foster. The Mass. 23 & 27th are with us also the 10th Conn….troops are constantly arriving. There is a large camp of cavalry about a half mile to the south west…I like to see them drill…it is…exciting to see them charge…they came rushing past us, their horses on the jump. We were ordered into column against cavalry and came to guard against cavalry as we would have done if they had been enemies. The field where we have been drilling…is opposite the 10th Conn. camp…H. Arthur White…". The original transmittal cover, endorsed by Chaplain Horace James (who had been poisoned), is included. Minor damp stains, else VG
