War-date Union soldier's letter, 1p. folio., written, on a page removed from an old ledger book, by Pvt. H. Arthur White [WIA Drewry's Bluff, Va., 5/16/64], Co. H., 25th Mass. Vols., Roanoke Island, [N. C.] Feb. 12, 1862, in part: "Through the goodness of god I am permitted to write you a few this morn…we are in full possession of the island…our victory is checked by the thought of what we have suffered for friend Randall Man was mortally wounded and has died …we hurried here yesterday. Geo. Kent was also wounded but I am glad to say but slightly and is in danger of losing his life…Brannan Gerrit and myself stayed with him…after the fight…Randall was shot in the stomach and George K just above the ball glanced out [off] of Geo and made but a slight flesh wound. The rest of our Leicester boys are safe but very much worn for we have been flowing the foe up with a sharp stick ever since we landed…we are quartered in the log buildings taken from the rebels…our baggage is aboard the vessels. I am going to show Mr. [Chaplain Horace] James where Randall was buried and shall have to close…your aft. son, H. Arthur White." Folded in the fashion of a stampless cover with "DUE 3" cancellation. Heavy toning, else VG
