War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Corp. H. Arthur White [WIA Drewry's Bluff, Va., 5/16/64], Co. H., 25th Mass. Vols., "Camp of the 25th at Plymouth, [N. C.], Mar. 30, 1863," in part: "…we arrived safe in this place…and have commenced to fortify ourselves. Gen. Foster has been here and laid out a fort fro Col. Lee's Brigade to build and we are hard at work. We have quite a force here…the shameless sutler is taking advantage of us and charging us shameful prices for his goods knowing we have no money to go anywhere else…he charges 50 c pr. pound for butter…30 c. pr. pd. for bologna sausages and everything in proportion…you heard all about the rebel attack on New Bern…the spy of the 21st has a good account of it. I wonder if they will try it on again…put down the copper headset the north and hang to the work and we shall win. We have to win there is no back out to the matter…affcty. your son, Arthur."
