War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Corp H. Arthur White [WIA Drewry's Bluff, Va., 5/16/64], Co. H., 25th Mass. Vols., Newbern, N. C., May 10, 1863, in part: "…I attended church in Plymouth…at noon we received orders to turn out…for a flag raising in Fort Williams the fort we have built here…they were not taking a very appropriate day for a military parade…after all the troops at the post viz. the 25th & 46th Mass. Regt, 2 companies of the 27th & 1 company of the 5 Mass. with Lee's 24th N. Y. Battery had witnessed the raising of the flag and had saluted it we marched to our parade where the 25th stacked arms and were ordered to strike tents and pack baggage for a move. The 85th N. Y. and the 103 Pa. had arrived from N and we were to take the boats…about dusk 7 Cos. of the 25th…left the wharf for N. the sailors on the different gunboats cheering us as we passed…while the Com. Perry, the flag ship of the squadron, paid us the compliment of burning colored lights and rockets…Sergt. John D. Mirick [MWIA Olustee, Fl., 2/20/64 as of 35th USCT] has been promoted…2nd Lieut. in the 1st Reg. Wilde's African Brigade to report to Newbern…he has not been discharged from the regiment yet but he has received a letter from Genl. Wilde informing him of his appointment…your aft. son, Arthur."
