War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. (6pp. with cross hatching) 8vo., written by Sgt. H. Arthur White [WIA Drewry's Bluff, Va., 5/16/64], Co. H., 25th Mass. Vols., "25th Regt. Mass. Vet. Vols., Camp Wellington near Portsmouth, Va., Apr. 26, 1864," in part: "We have just returned from Roanoke Island…in heavy marching order…was ordered last Friday…to march in light order to the boats and were immediately started via of the Albemarle & Chesapeake canal for North Carolina…on reaching Roanoke Island we learned…that Plymouth had fallen before an overwhelming force of rebels. Our boys held out bravely and it is said that the slaughter of the rebels was terrible…we remained at R. I. only one day and was then ordered to return…there is a great movement of troops on foot…we are to go to Gloucester Point opposite Yorktown, Va…we have much to hope from the coming campaign and if victorious I shall always feel proud of having done my part in this glorious army. Praying that you amy hear soon of the complete overturn of the rebellion…your aft. son, Arthur." Some toning, else VG
