War-date Union soldier's letter, 3 1/4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Moses M. Ordway, 40th Mass. Vols., Fort Ethan Allen, Va., Sept. 24-27, 1862 to his brother, in part: "…we have been out on picket duty…we lived high while we were out. We confiscated everything we could lay our hands upon…the pickets are stationed on the hills in squads of four or five…the officers came round at night and told us to take every man after nine o'clock that did not have the counter sign, alive if we could…if not shoot him. This is the roughest country around here…the Potomac runs just below us. Its waters are very clean…not more than 15 yards wide…there is some negro huts round…with log chimneys on the outside half as large as the house itself…[Sept. 25]…we are placed under Heintzelman. He was at Harpers Ferry at the last fight. How do you like the President Proclamation? I like it tip top [?] the slaves they have kicked up fuss enough…the Rebels will begin to think the north is not much disposed to compromise with them…[Sept. 27]…we went out wood chopping…to stop Rebel artillery and cavalry from coming through…there was three to four hundred of us…your aff. Bro. Moses M. Ordway…". The original stamped transmittal cover is also included. VG
