War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Corp. Moses M. Ordway, 40th Mass. Vols., Miner's Hill, Va., Nov. 16, 1862 to his brother, in part: "…we have been pretty busy lately stockading our tents. We have been taking down a house. We were lucky enough to get 3 of the doors…the boys stockade their tents with logs when they cant get boards…Frank Nichols and me went into a man's yard to get some. I picked up a board about 14 feet long by 2 ft wide…Fran did the same. The old fellow started after us and if you seen me about that time you would have seen some tall skedaddling but I saved the board. One side of our tent is of logs [and] by taking some of the sacred soil…which is…red clay…it makes a splendid mortar…Gen. Cowdin did his best to get us into the Texas expedition…a man that will come out here for three hundred doll. thinking to get home in a little while and have a good time is a damned fool…I have been promoted corporal…Moses M. Ordway." The original transmittal cover is also included. VG
