A good war-date Union colonel's manuscript pass, 1p. oblong 8vo., accomplished in the hand of and signed by Col. Burr Porter, "Head Quarters 40th Regt. Mass. Vols., 2nd Brigade, Abercombie's Division, Dec. 15, 1862, in full: "Pass Corporal Moses Ordway and Private Gray of Co. I. to Washington and return today. Burr Porter, Col. 40th Rgt. Mass. Vols., Comdg." Burr Baldwin Porter (1826-1870) was a Crimean War staff officer, John C. Fremont staff officer, colonel 40th Mass. Vols., cavalry commander who was killed during the Franco-Prussian War while on the staff of French General Chanzy. The pass was endorsed and approved with rank by Brig. General ROBERT COWDIN (1805-1874)who saw action at Williamsburg, Malvern Hill and Chantilly. Usual folds, else near fine
