A good war-date Union officer's letter, 1pp. folio, written by Captain Augustus Alonzo Hoit, Co. G, 8th Maine Vols. (later captain 34th USCT), Dawfuskie Island, S. C., Feb. 23, 1862, in part: "…"Fort Vulcan" on Point Venus is nearly completed and we are at work on another fort situated upon Bird Island in the middle of Savannah river. The new fort is to be called "Battery Hamilton". It is a little nearer the city of Savannah…we shall probably erect another higher up the river…I am going to the batteries with two companies tomorrow…I am senior captain…I have charge of all such expeditions…I have charge of the whole even when the rest of the captains are with us unless the Col. should…go which he has not done yet…the rebels do not seem to be very "spunky" down this way…they take…good care to keep at a respectful distance from our batteries. We have about two Regts here…we have made greater advances towards the enemy than the Army of the Potomac has done. General Sherman is not here very often and Gen. Viele is determined to advance as fast as possible…yours in love, Alonzo…". VG
