A good war-date Union officer's letter, 4pp. folio, written by Captain Augustus Alonzo Hoit, Co. G, 8th Maine Vols. (later captain 34th USCT), Beaufort, S. C., Aug. 28, 1862, in part: "…it appears that there are men in our town who would gladly sacrifice our whole army providing it would give them the privilege of staying at home…the fact that a man is drafted should be an eternal disgrace…they will certainly find the true level in the army…when this war is fairly ended slavery in the rebel states will be among the things that were. We cannot have…peace while slavery…exists in the U. S…I would confiscate…all rebel property…make use of all lawful means for conquering the traitors. Our government has played war long enough…if our government had displayed one half the earnestness as has been displayed by the rebels, the war would have ended long ago…we had better fight till every Northern man is killed than have the old order of things…yours in love, Alonzo…".
