A good pair of war-date Union soldier's letters, totaling 5 1/2pp. 8vo., the first letter is a partial and is written on McClellan patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Eli J. Ague [DOD 1864], Co. B, 39th Penn. Vols. [10th PRVC], "Camp Pierpont, Va., Mar. 7, 1862," in part: "…we have Sunday morning inspection…the officers inspect every man's knapsack…if his clothes…are not clean…he is put in the guard house…everything must be clean as it is possible…a speck of rust or dirt as big as a pin head on our guns would get us a hell of a scolding…we have a man of the colored persuasion hired to cook for the whole company. He makes coffee for breakfast & supper & soup for dinner…[Camp Near Belle Plains, Va., Feb. 7, 1863]…we are all washing our clothes & fixing up to move…we are going to Alexandria. I heard that…the second brigade was going to Washington & the first brigade to Georgetown. It is likely that we will do guard duty & patrol the three cities till we get recruited. The ninth Corps is shipping today to go to the South west, probably to Tennessee…I have not heard of John Matthews since he was taken prisoner at Fredericksburg….". Both VG.
