War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 4to. & 2 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Corp. George P. Jarvis [WIA Perryville, Ky., Oct. 8, 1862], (signed G. P. Jarvis), Co. C, 3rd Ohio Vols., Camp Jefferson [Bacon Creek, KY.], Jan. 25, 1862, in part: "…four or five of the boys in our mess went out yesterday afternoon and killed a hog that would dress about 200 lbs. and brought it under cover of night, then went down to the commissary and 'hooked' an old vinegar barrel and salted it down. We will have pork enough for a long time independent of 'Uncle Sam.'…you talk so much about Mr. Collier that if you was a little older I should mistrust something…I have to write him and tell him that if he don't look out I will have an order out coffee and pistols for seventeen. The scamp is trying to to rob me of my sister…when I get back we will study music together…I hardly thought when I used to sing Dixie that I should be there so soon , but I can tell you that this part of Dixie is not half so interesting as the song…I intend to live in Dixie, but according to mother's presentiment there is no danger of my dying here. 'Bully for the presentiment.'…tell mother that she need not be afraid of my losing my head going to parties for there is not a secesh within 20 miles of us…". VG.
