War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Corp. George P. Jarvis [WIA Perryville, Ky., Oct. 8, 1862], (signed G. P. Jarvis), Co. C, 3rd Ohio Vols., Camp Jefferson [Bacon Creek, KY.], Jan. 30, 1862, in part: "…the news got to me…the 18th Regt…were in a most pitiable situation…they had had nothing to eat for two weeks but boiled corn…let men say it was a fabrication of the grossest kind. Our Regt…have had plenty of boiled cornet it is in the shape of either the best hominy or meal and is highly relished by us and the 18th fares as well as the 3rd…I could live for two weeks pretty well on boiled corn…if a man cant live on that let him go to the d_l. Our regimental hospital is a very good one. It is well supplied with blankets, a good stove which is kept piping hot and [has] very attentive physicians. If the hospital of the 18th is onto as good it is the fault of the officers of whom I have a very poor opinion especially the Col. [future Bvt. Brig. Gen. Timothy Stanley] and Maj. [future Bvt. Brig. Gen. Charles H. Grosvenor]…". The original transmittal cover, endorsed by Chaplain Erastus A. Strong 3rd Ohio, and hand canceled "Bacon Creek, KY, Jan. 31, 1862," is included. VG
