War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Corp. George P. Jarvis [WIA Perryville, Ky., Oct. 8, 1862], (signed G. P. Jarvis), Co. C, 3rd Ohio Vols., Camp Jefferson [Bacon Creek, KY.], Feb. 2, 1862, in part: "…Camp Jefferson is on the Louisville & Nashville RR sixty miles from the former…it is very pleasantly situated but I think not very healthy. The 18th is very unfortunate…owing to their inexperience. If they had gone through what we did in Va. and then come her they would have…benefited by the change instead of being so sickly…there is to be two commissioned officers and six non-commissioned or privates detailed for six months to recruit their Regts…this looks…as though our head man thought that the war was not going to close as soon as some have thought it would…they can hold me for three years and at the end…if the war still continues and I still continue. They can hold me longer should it be deemed necessary…I hope that it will not be necessary for me to reenlist provided we are let alone by foreign powers…they will not 'pitch in' this time. Should Johny Bull have the [?] to mix we will send him and his warriors to sit with pluto…". VG.
