War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Corp. George P. Jarvis [WIA Perryville, Ky., Oct. 8, 1862], (signed G. P. Jarvis), Co. C, 3rd Ohio Vols., Huntsville, Ala., Aug. 10, 1862, in part: "…we have a good many calls to make now. I will give you a list. 4 A. M. Revielle; 4,15…first call for Battalion drill…6,15…Breakfast call…8…guard mounting…4,30 P. M. Brigade drill at Sunset retreat. 8,30 P. M. Tattoo. 9…Taps…it is astonishing how the men have learned to cheat the officers…in this camp the orders have not been very stringent and they have been allowed to go through the guard lines at pleasure…a few days since there came an order from division head quarters to the effect that no private could pass Regimental lines, even without a pass from Gen. Rousseau…the order is not respected…except in the case of the officers…but if one of the privates wished to go out the guard-if the Col. or officer of the day is not around [the guard] will turn his back and not see him. It would be just as easy to pen up a herd of wild buffalos…as it is to keep this regiment within bounds…". VG
