War-date Union soldier's letter, 4p. 4to., written by Corp. George P. Jarvis [WIA Perryville, Ky., Oct. 8, 1862], (signed G. Percy Jarvis), Co. C, 3rd Ohio Vols., Nashville, Tenn., May 31, 1863, in part: "…here I am again in old Nashville…I had much rather have remained in Corinth…evening found us in Memphis via Memphis & Charleston RR…the next day found us on board the steamer Von Phil…we stuck on every sand bar in the river…they may keep us here on some detached service…what do you now think of my opinion of Strait's command? I knew…that he would be captured…the expedition was a miserable failure…I suppose by this time Vicksburg has fallen…let it fall…years will yet elapse ere the rebellion is terminated and even then its end may not be so favorable to us. I have lost all faith in our gov't. for as long as the affairs of the disunited States are in the present hands every day is but one more step towards the devil…I am completely discouraged and care but little what happens. You need not say it…outside the family for it is nobodies business especially those poor miserable wretches who…can be called by no other name than Slow bellys…". VG
