Federral soldier’s letter, 2pp., June 26, 1862, “Camp Near Richmond, signed by Joseph Barber, addressed to Isaac Allard of Sheffield, Vermont. In part, “...Poor David is no more but his name will be with heroes of the nation for centuries. He died a true hearted soldier...” He gives details of his sickness and the last week of his life, and explains why the body was not sent home: “...it would have taken three of four days to have got any one to embalm him or to get a decent coffin. He had the best possible care under the circumstances...”
