War-date Union soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by a 6th Michigan soldier, 4pp. octavo, May 23, 1863, Humphrey Station Parish of St. James, Lousiana, and reads in part: “...We returned yesterday from quite an important expedition. Were out just two weeks. Probably you will see accounts of it in the papers. The cavalry were under the command of Col. [Edmund Jackson] Davis of the Texas Cavalry, our company being attached to his command for this expedition only. The scene of operations was on the line of the Jackson Railroad. We struck it at a point some forty miles above New Orleans at Hammond’s Station. We took about twenty prisoners, burned a large shoe manufactory, a railroad bridge, and two Rebel camps, also destroyed the telegraph. We then went up the road in the direction of Jackson, Mississippi to Tangipahoa, near which place is Camp Moore....At Tangipahoa we burned a large R.R. bridge and depot, also cut the telegraph. We had a running fight with five companies of Mississippi and Lousiana Cavalry for about thirty miles. They made a stand at Independence and gave us a short fight. Our company being the largest in service were placed in the advance and there fore had most of the fighting to do, but the enemy did not stand long after our boys got fairly to work. They fled leaving their killed and about twenty prisoners. Our company loss is one corporal killed, one private killed. The whole loss on our side is one captain wounded, two privates wounded, and one corporal killed and one private killed...On our return we burnt two depots, one large car factory, a number of cars, and RR bridges. One the whole the expedition was an entire success. With the exceptino of Port Hudson and a few other scattered forces this State is pretty thoroughly cleaned out. We are expecting every day to hear that Port Hudson is in possession of our forces. I think that a majority of the people here sympathize with the Rebels and wish them success...” Fine condition.
