A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Harlan P. Martin, Co. E, 123rd New York Vols., Bridgeport, Ala., Oct. 26, 1863 to his mother, in part: "…we have got back here at Bridgeport…we haven't had chance of stopping in a place more than three or four days. They have kept us dragging around all the time since we came here…we took the cars to Anderson, Tenn…marched to Stevenson…we may go to Chattanooga…they are building a bridge across the Tennessee river here and when it is done the railroad will have to be opened from here to Chattanooga…the troops at the front are on half rations…they have to draw everything across the mountains from Stevenson and the roads are almost impassable. They will have to get the railroad through there before long or else they cant live. General Rosecrans passed up the railroad for the north while we were at Anderson. He came out of the car and made a speech…he is quite a plain old fellow. General Grant went down on the cars while we were there…everything is very scarce here on the rail line…we get scarcely enough to eat and very often [are] hungry but if a fellow has money he can get enough…H. P. Martin, Co. E, 123rd, 1st Brig., 1st Div., 12th A. C…". VG
