War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Ephraim W. Frost [POW Winchester, Va., 6/13/63; WIA Piedmont, Va., 6/05/64 & DOD 1/15/65], Co. I, 116th Ohio Vols., Winchester, Va., Apr. 17, 1863, in part: "…it is reported that thare is a large force of rebel cavalry hovering around here…I don't know how many we went [sent] out with a wagon train…we got about 350 bales of wheat…thare was a train came in yesterday which brought in 40 wagons of leather. That was a pretty good haul and they said that they did not get more than half of it. Thare is lots of old wheat around here but thare is not much sowed…Capt. Brown has ben returned to duty…and his lieutenant was promoted to first lieutenant and returned to duty…they found old [Capt.] Brown [accused of drunkenness and whoring after his command was captured by CSA Partisan Ranger McNeill] guilty of everything…but still they let him go…if a poor private [?] round wrong they will punish him for it…we have to be [?] on the turnpike and the fortifications now a days. Billy Mc has got back. He got on a bender at Grafton and got on the wrong train…went part of the way to Wheeling before he found out his mistake. He lost his pocket book and some of the letters that was sent by him. Tell Mel that the lieutenant says that captain Dodd at Columbus would tend to having him his discharge…E. W. Frost…Co.
