War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Ephraim W. Frost [POW Winchester, Va., 6/13/63; WIA Piedmont, Va., 6/05/64 & DOD 1/15/65], Co. I, 116th Ohio Vols., Winchester, Va., May 17, 1863, in part: "…this is the greatest place for springs…there is one close here that sutlies [serves] the whole town with water and runs a mile besides. there is a pipe where the water comes out that is as much as 8 inches in diameter…the water runs out that is about 18 inches and 2 deep and it runs full all of the time…Lieutenant A. D. frame has gone out with a squad of men to guard a train…Bradley B. has gone out in that squad. I have not seen anything of the rebels that are a hovering around here. thare is reported to be a big lot of them within 22 miles of here…the troops have all left here but our brigade…the rail road was tore up and we did not do it…E. W. Frost." Frost's phonetic spelling has been corrected.
