War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. oblong 8vo., written by Pvt. Ephraim W. Frost [POW Winchester, Va., 6/13/63; WIA Piedmont, Va., 6/05/64 & DOD 1/15/65], Co. I, 116th Ohio Vols., Winchester, Va., May 30, 1863, in part: "…we heard good news from Vicksburg and I hope he had got it but it was sayed that general Grant had ben repulsed with a loss of 3,000 men but I hope that he will get it yet…Gen. Hooker did not gain much in affair at Fredericksburg. Well the splendid sword that the regt throwed in a bought for Lt. Col. Wolds has come…it is a splendid affair. It was to have been presented to him today. It will be presented to him this evening…thare has been part of our Regt out on a scout. They have just…got back. They brought 25 horses, 7 or 8 prisoners…E. W. Frost." Frost's phonetic spelling has been corrected. VG
