War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Ephraim W. Frost [POW Winchester, Va., 6/13/63; WIA Piedmont, Va., 6/05/64 & DOD 1/15/65], Co. I, 116th Ohio Vols., "In Camp at Bunker Hill, Va., June 11, 1863," in part: "…we left Winchester one week ago today and came to this place which is 12 ms on the road to Martinsburg. It has been very dry here…butter is worth 20 cts a pound and eggs 75. Thare is wagons trains passing here nearly all of the time. The regt did not come out here. Thare was only 2 companies that come. We did not bring our tents…they have sent back for our knapsacks…Charlese Regt left here about the time of the secesh raid into Western Virginia and we have not heard anything certain from them since. We heard flying reports they had got horses and ware going as mounted infantry. We are camped in a church thare is three in this place. The floor has been torn out of this one and the cavalry have used it for a stable. The others have been pretty well used up…E. W. Frost." Frost's phonetic spelling has been corrected. VG
