War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Ephraim W. Frost [POW Winchester, Va., 6/13/63; WIA Piedmont, Va., 6/05/64 & DOD 1/15/65], Co. I, 116th Ohio Vols., "Camp at Martinsburg, Va., Oct. 25, 1863," in part: "…we were all on picket last night. There was a deserter came in from Lee's army. He had only left the sesech 3 days before. He said that General Lee was a falling back when he left. He had been in the army 2 years and 8 months. He was very ragged and said that they had to give 75 dollars for a pair of boots. That is a pretty tall tale especially when they only get 11 dollars a month…Bill Frost [WIA Piedmont, Va., 6/5/64] has not got back yet…I hope that Bill will come back again for I would hate to have him be a deserter…the boys all liked him first rate when he was here. He was just as good a soldier as there was in our company. There is 3 or 4 hant came back yet…I wonder what Stephen thinks of Old Val[landigham] the old out cast of creation…I wonder if he don't feel kind of sick in the bowel since old Val got beat so bad…you wanted to know if we were exchanged…Wm. McMillen wrote to Governor Todd and he got answer which said that we are lawfully exchanged…have you had to go out and muster anymore since I left. We have to drill 9 hours a day…bully for Col. Frost. He served them rite. His old head is rite yet…E. W. Frost…". Frost's phonetic spelling has been corrected. VG
