War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Ephraim W. Frost [POW Winchester, Va., 6/13/63; WIA Piedmont, Va., 6/05/64 & DOD 1/15/65], Co. I, 116th Ohio Vols., "In Camp at Martinsburg, Va., Nov. 2-6, 1863," in part: "…we heard that there had been a fit down in Tenn. and old Jo Hooker gave the rebs hark [?]…I hoope they will keep on giving them fits. The deserters keep coming in from the beseech ranks everyday. Thare was three came in Friday nit and three more…Saturday morning…I hope that old Lee's army will all desert him before spring movements…[Nov. 6]…well the deserters still keep a stringing in by ones and twos nearly every day…thare is…families leaving here nearly all of the time and going north where they can get something to eat. It looks pretty hard to see them a going along with one horse and wagon with a few things in it and no man with them, only women and children. I expect the husbands are in the army and they are going over to us to live while their men fite us…has Bill F[rost] ben there…I hope he will come back and not have to be brought back like Co. C. boys did some of them [Union deserters]…E. W. Frost…". Frost's phonetic spelling has been corrected. VG
