War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Ephraim W. Frost [POW Winchester, Va., 6/13/63; WIA Piedmont, Va., 6/05/64 & DOD 1/15/65], Co. I, 116th Ohio Vols., "In Camp at Sleepy Creek, Morgan Co., West Va., Dec. 26-29, 1863," in part: "…thare was one whole regt went home…it was the 20 Pa. of 6 month men. They think that they have ben out a long while. There are lots of deserters coming in…all the time. There was 400 sent to Philadelphia to take the oath…General Averill just went in on the Virginia and Tennessee r. r. and tore it up for 15 miles and burned all of the stores at Salem consisting [of] 2,000 of flour, 10,000 bushels of wheat, 100,000 bushels of shelled corn and 50,000 of oats, 2,000 bbls. of meat, 1,000 sacks of salt, 30 boxes of clothing…including 100 wagons…[Dec. 29, 1863]...I wonder if Harris has any notion of enlisting…I don't want…him doing that…no there is lots of others that can come just as well…E. W. Frost.". Frost's phonetic spelling has been corrected. VG
