War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Ephraim W. Frost [POW Winchester, Va., 6/13/63; WIA Piedmont, Va., 6/05/64 & DOD 1/15/65], Co. I, 116th Ohio Vols., "In Camp at Sleepy Creek, Morgan Co., West Va., Jan. 7, 1864," in part: "…there has been a little scare down at Martinsburg but it has all blown over…there had been a train of wagons captured of [Col. James] Mulligan's out about Petersburg…I don't know how many there was taken…thare was a scouting party went up the Valley to…Mt. Jackson and thare was not any rebs this side of that place but there was a force at that place. There was one young man came to our Co. and enlisted yesterday. He lives about 1 or 2 miles out in the country…I heard that the 39 regt had all went in as old veterans and was going home on a 30 days furlow and recruit…P. S. I have got a rebel PO stamp and I will send it to you… E. W. Frost.". Frost's phonetic spelling has been corrected. VG
