War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Ephraim W. Frost [POW Winchester, Va., 6/13/63; WIA Piedmont, Va., 6/05/64 & DOD 1/15/65], Co. I, 116th Ohio Vols., "In Camp at Sleepy Creek, Morgan Co., West Va., Feb.17, 1864," in part: "…thare was a pretty cool robbery on the railroad a few days ago. The express was stopped between Harpers Ferry and Martinsburg in the night…the passengers [were] robbed of everything…and they did not disturb the baggage nor the mail. They piled up a pile of rails on the track and thrower the engine off the track. Gen. Sullivan started [with] three thousand men after them…they started on all of the roads. Thare was thirty eight of the robbers and they have got ten of them. They found that they were about to be cached and they thrower a side their uniforms…hid their arms and put their horses onto the plow…a lot of them found…that they were about to taken and they hoisted a white flag and said that they were going after a man that was killed at Gettysburg…they could not play off…so they were brought in…deserters are coming in as fast as ever. There was one squad of three hundred came in at one time…there is lots of refugees fleeing…conscription into the rebel ranks…I hope they will all desert…Col. Strait [Col. Abel D. Streight 51st Indiana] and 110 other officers have escaped from Libby [Prison]. Col. Strait and 17 of the regt had arrived in the Union lines…one man got a rebel suit and was in Richmond 9 days and they did not have the least suspicion of him. He got safe to Washington…E. W. Frost.".
