War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Ephraim W. Frost [POW Winchester, Va., 6/13/63; WIA Piedmont, Va., 6/05/64 & DOD 1/15/65], Co. I, 116th Ohio Vols., "In Camp at Sleepy Creek, West Va., Feb.24, 1864," in part: "…the Johnnies have not bothered us any…we get orders once and a while to be on the watch for them…the Col. came up here night before last and said that the rebs were in force at Winchester and had the pickets doubled and sent out on a scout…they did not see anything…our forces are moving on Mobile both by water and land and I hope that they will get the place. The reb force at Mobile is…estimated from 15,000 to 150,000…certainly [they] cant have 150,000…for that is nearly as much as they have all together…E. W. Frost…". Frost's phonetic spelling has been corrected. VG
