War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Moses M. Ordway, 40th Mass. Vols., Yorktown, [Va.], June 2, 1863 to his brother, in part: "…we may evacuate West Point…our cavalry scouts found about thirty thousand Rebs up to White House [Landing] 14 miles from West Point…they had taken a notion to drop onto us…the rebs had some batteries planted on the river between us and Yorktown…we left in the night…I have been round looking at McClellan's old fortifications…that was McClellan's favorite way of fighting [that is] with the pick and shovel. That method…killed more of his men than ever bullets…Serg. M. M. Ordway…". The original stamped transmittal cover is also included. VG
