War-date Union soldier's letter, 3 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Moses M. Ordway, 40th Mass. Vols., Laurel, [Md.], July 12, 1863 to his brother, in part: "…last Tuesday we were 15 miles from Richmond. Today we are 18 miles from Washington on the Baltimore railroad all smashed up…we were ordered to march…it was the hardest time we ever went through …we were all glad to get off the Peninsula…we took transports at Yorktown and arrived at Washington last night…we marched across the city to the depot …we went aboard the cars when we arrived [at] this place. We were all brought up…by running into another train loaded with soldiers that had stopped to take in water…we were not going very fast…it piled up the cars in pretty good shape. Non one was killed…but there was quite a number…baldy bruised. Not one of our Regt was hurt. The greatest pressure came on a New York Regt…we are going up to Meade. Bully for Meade…but it is a hard old lace up there. That is where they do the fighting…Moses M. Ordway." The original stamped transmittal cover is also included. VG
