War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Moses M. Ordway, 40th Mass. Vols., Berlin, Md., July 17, 1863 to his brother, in part: "When I wrote before we were all smashed up on the railroad…they got the track cleared and put on some more cars…at Relay House we took the Harpers Ferry road…Lee would have made a big thing if he had succeeded. We could hear firing all day…we went through Middletown, Boonsboro and at Funkstown we got the news that Lee's main army had got across the river…you aught to have seen the army when it came back…on our way here we passed the old battle grounds of Antietam, South Mountain and other places…they might have bagged Lee's whole army if they had been a little smarter…our forces took any quantity of prisoners. 75 went by here yesterday…they are picking up stragglers by the hundreds…you had better stop those damned riots about drafting up North. Those give the Rebs a good deal of courage…it has been so rainy that…our Regt was laying pontoons…Moses M. Ordway. P. S. I hear they are drafting at home if you are drafted and have a good job…you had better pay $300 than to come out here…". The original stamped transmittal cover is also included. VG
