A victorious war-date Union officer's letter, 1p. 4to., written by Captain Augustus Alonzo Hoit, Co. A, 34th USCT, (former captain 8th Maine Vols), Morris Island, S. C., Sept. 7, 1863, in part: "Forts Wagner & Greg are ours. We bombarded them all day yesterday and last night till 12…when it was ascertained that the rebs had fled from the forts. It was our intention to have charged on the forts at 9 o'clock this morning…Sumpter is a mass of ruins and of no account…the Navy had nothing to do in the reduction of Sumpter…we expect to pay our respects to Fort Moultrie. It is possible however that the Monitors may move up to Charleston…soon as they can pass the obstructions in the river…yours in love, Alonzo…". Minor toning, else VG
