A good war-date Union Ambulance Corp officer's letter, 6pp. 4to., written by 1st Lt. Augustus S. Tuttle, 36th Mass. Vols., "Head Quarters, 1st Div. Amb. Corps, 9th A. C. near Nicholsville, Ky., Sept. 6, 1863," in small part: "…one quart of scott milk & three doses of peppermint is all the medicine I have taken since I have been in the army…yesterday we moved the very sick to the General Hospital…today I have sent twenty Amb[ulances] to Crab Orchard with the convalescent Perry & Hawkins of Co. F were among them…Hawkins married Mr. Washburn's daughter. He looks bad but is getting better. Henry Aldrich & N. K. Sprague had to ride on the mule teams…they were not able, but perhaps will stand it…I sent two horse & four horse loads of forage with the train & they will return with the train for more…[Here he gives a detailed list of the sick and which hospitals they are in.]…when he called me to the Amb. he showed me his tongue which was black as a coal…he died of Yellow Fever…if Draper [bvt. brig. gen. William F. Draper 1842-1911] wants to lie about me let him lie. When Capt. Marsh (Capt of the whole Amb. Corps.) heard how I had been treated. It made him swear awfully. If Gen. Welch [Brig. Gen. Thomas Welsh died malaria, Cincinnati, Ohio, Aug. 14, 1863] had lived he would have been court marshaled. He told me never to knuckle to a G..L. D..n son of a bitch of them again but to obey orders which I always have done…I have plenty of friends at Corps Head Quarters & I am more independent than any Col. I have no trouble now the old scamp is dead. Col. Norton said if he could see the hearse with his remains he would stone it. That is the way we all feel through the Div…if you see Draper you may give my compliments to him & tell him that I had nothing to do about smuggling Jacks and I will thank him not to report any more stories about me until he knows they are true…A. S. Tuttle...". VG
