A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Lemuel P. Foss, Co. F, 13th New Hampshire, Suffolk, Va., March 18, 1863, in part: "…we left Newport News last Friday…we have got…most down into the Dismal Swamp. It is quite a good looking place…but not near as pleasant a looking place as it was at Newport News. We are in camp just outside of the city of Suffolk. The rebels are on the other side of the Black Water but they come over once in a while to see us and we have to…drive them back…our boys bring in some of the grey coats…every day. Gen. Corcoran's Brigade is here. They had a great time yesterday. They had a bbl. of beer to each company…they all went down to the city and at night the[y] had a torch light procession. They are all…Irish and of course St. Patrick's Day had to be celebrated. It is quite a noble brigade…you often see it spoken of…as the New York Irish Brigade…write what they think of the draft etc in New Hampshire…Lemuel." Near fine.
