A great war-date Union officer's art work dated February 1863 showing the Brooks Mansion, Gen. McLean's Headquarters, pencil drawing, titled in ink, 8 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches; pasted into early mat, repaired closed tear running across the image; manuscript inscription on mat by the artist, reading, in full: "Compliments of Wm. C. Margedant, late Capt. Supt. Topo. Eng. Dept., Army of the Cumberland and on the staff of Gen. McLean, Aquia Creek, Army of the Potomac." General Nathaniel McLean wintered at the Bell-Air plantation in Stafford County near Fredericksburg in 1862-63, commanding troops who were guarding Virginia's Northern Neck. This drawing of his headquarters was done by Captain William C. Margedant of the topographical corps attached to his staff. Also included is an 1895, 6pp. 4to., type written letter concerning sending the sketch to General McLean. Overall VG besides the condition report listed above.
