War-date Union soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by I.H. Leavenworth, Co. B,1st New York Veteran Cavalry, on U.S. Christian Commission stationary, 4pp. octavo, Field Hospital, Sandy Hook, Maryland, August 30, 1864, with cover, it reads in part: “...the dismounted men of our Reg...were ordered to ‘turn in’ their horses and rumor says they are going to Sandusky, Ohio to guard rebel prisoners... The last letter I wrote to you I wrote that there was a prospect of staying in camp some time. That night the rebs made their appearance and we were all marched down near Sandy Hook. Then those who had carbines were ordered to the Hts. after they had ‘fell in’ and were moving off. A straggler came up with a carbine and was ordered by a corporal to fall in with the rest. He made a great many excuses and finally gave me his carbine, rather than go himself...The carbine I got was a ‘Burnsdie Patent.’ I have since traded it for a ‘Sharps’ which are allowed to be the best ‘single shooter’ in use, that are furnished by the government. Our officers tried to get us to get the ‘Wesson rifle’ at our own expense. They are a nice thing, and I should think the Government would furnish us with them, as they are much lighter than a carbine and will shoot as far and can be fired very fast as they need no cap, and can be loaded in one half the time it takes to cap a carbine, but the men did not like to pay $25.00 in advance for the gun, and furnish their own cartridges at $15.00 per thousand. Some of the 1st N.Y. Lincoln have them...” Very good condition.
