War-date Union soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by 1st Sergt. L.W. David, 4th Wisconsin Cavalry, 2-1/2pp. octavo, Baton Rouge, Lousiana, November 2, 1864, and reads in part: “....I belong to the 4th Wis. Cavalry. I have been in the service since May / 61. ..I re enlisted last January for three years more. I presume that you have heard of the Old 4th Infantry...the Regt has seen a great deal of service....I must tell you what a great time we had here about three weeks ago. All the cavalry forces here under Command of General Lee made a raid into Mississippi. There was quite a number of our men dressed in Confedrate uniform (my self amongst the number) I had twnety men with me and was from five to ten miles in advance of our forces. I passed for a Confederate captain and when we got to Clinton (40 miles from Baton Rouge) we took a number of prisoners, one Col. one Capt. 2 Lieutenants, and (39) enlisted men...” Very good condition.
