A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Harlan P. Martin, Co. E, 123rd New York Vols., Estell Springs, Tenn., April 5, [1864] to his mother, in part: "…there has been some talk of our moving from here…a great many troops are en route from Nashville to the front…there has [been] quite a number of regiments passed within the last few days…they are veteran regiments and the rail road is so pressed they cannot get transportation…Cos. A, K have come back from McMinnville…one of Co. A boys was married while up there. His name was [John W.] Baker [who deserted to be with his new bride at Elk River railroad Bridge, Tenn., April 26, 1864]…H. P. wait will soon be (if he is not now) 2nd Lt. I heard something about Wait's sisters writing to the Col. to have him promoted…H. P. Martin, Co. E, 123rd N. Y. V., 1st Brig., 1st Div., 12th Corps…".
