War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. James B. Sterling, Co. E, 7th Conn. Vols., [MWIA Olustee, Florida, 2/20/64], Morris Island S. C., Aug. 9, 1863, in part: "…there is a great deal going on in S. C. now. It is all excitement…I saw by the papers that you and a number of others were drafted. Harlon P. Ives also. You can do as you please…but if you would take my advice you would not try to resist the draft…it will make a fuss at home…there will be blood enough shed without fighting at home. There has ben some talk of sending one of the Conn. Reg. home to enforce the draft…they will never send this Reg for they would never get them [back] again. They would have to send two more to get us again so there is no danger of them doing that…James B. Sterling…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Near fine.
