War-date Union officer's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Lt. Robert H. Crist (1829-1912), Co. L, 1st Ind. Hvy. Artillery], Baton Rouge, La., June 29, 1864, in part: "…the old darkee (Fielding Munday) that I was to send…married this spring, has a granny for a wife. I hardly think I shall send him. Several of our drivers & stable boys & cooks have married in the past 6 month. A nigger must have a wife. I have 21 wagons, 84 mules, 1 ambulance, 7 horses etc. You would laugh to see my train, each darkee & his wife…more baggage then they both can carry. You would laugh to see refugee darkees coming into the lines packing their baggage, but…enough about the nigger. Many of them are getting spoiled, saucy, lazy & independent…they are tried [of] soldiering and would rather be home except the love of green backs that is keeping many men in the army. I love money, but money never induced me to soldier…this climate is too hot to wear a dress coat…I wear a blouse…straw hat…a marshals vest with eagle buttons…we are obliged to wear something military. Citizens are not allowed to wear anything military…Brig. Genls. were so plenty in New Orleans the other day I could have killed 6 or 8…with a shot gun and they are well mixed with major Genls…do you deal mostly in green backs or do you have much of the old currency. Do not keep much of the state treasury notes on hand long. U. S. treasury motes are bad enough…address R. H. Crist, a. R. Q. M. 1st Regt. Ind. Heavy Artillery…".
